Official Poster

The official poster for the 1954 FIFA World Cup in Switzerland was designed by the artist Werner Weiskönig. This piece is considered a sought-after rarity and was printed by J.C. Müller AG in Zürich using color lithography. The poster features a dramatic illustration of a goalkeeper's face catching a ball. He is depicted with an intense, wide-eyed expression and a slight tilt of the eyebrow that has been described by some as reflecting either grief or shock.

Werner Weiskönig

Werner Weiskönig (1907–1982) was a prolific German-born Swiss commercial artist and stamp designer who gained international recognition for creating the official 1954 FIFA World Cup poster. Though best known for this single sports commission, he was a dominant figure in Swiss philately, winning top prizes for every one of the 36 stamp series he designed.

Beyond graphic design, he was an exhibition builder and creator of murals and stained-glass windows. He also produced numerous oil paintings, often focusing on landscapes and still lifes.
