Zarb

Zarb

First documented in Malta in 1417, we find it recorded as Sarbo, Zarbe, Czarb, Zarp, and Zarba/u. Most likely an evolution of the Sicilian surname Zarbo, itself from the Arabic word zarb, meaning either “cattle pen”, a “hunter’s enclosure”, a “hedge or thicket”, or a “water channel”. The escallop shell initially served as an emblem for pilgrims. It would go on to symbolise piety, victory and warrior spirit.
