The campaign had been preceded by a Russian military buildup since early 2021 and numerous Russian demands for security measures and legal prohibitions against Ukraine joining NATO.

May 7

The SBU announced that it had foiled a Russian plot to assassinate Zelenskyy and several senior Ukrainian military leaders and arrested two Ukrainian government protection unit colonels on suspicion of involvement.

One person was killed by Russian shelling in Sumy Oblast.

Russian-installed officials in Luhansk claimed that five people were injured in a fire caused by a Ukrainian missile strike on an oil depot.

Ukrainian media reported that the HUR carried out a cyberattack on the Russian software firm 1C Company.

In Russia, the governor of Belgorod Oblast claimed that seven people were killed and 35 others were injured in a Ukrainian drone strike that hit three vehicles in the village of Berezovka.

Russia claimed to have taken the villages of Soloviove in Donetsk Oblast and Kotlyarivka in Kharkiv Oblast, 20 kilometers from Kupiansk.

Ukraine claimed to have destroyed a Russian military fast attack craft in Crimea using a naval drone.

Ukrainian forces claimed a series of successful counterattacks against Russian forces near Bakhmut, resulting in an advance of some 500 metres, and inflicting casualties on Russian soldiers and the destruction of four supply trucks, a BMP-2, and a BMD-4 using drones.

In Berdiansk, Yevgeniy Ananievsky, a Russian-appointed official allegedly responsible for setting up torture chambers in occupied Zaporizhzhia Oblast, was killed after a bomb exploded in his car.

Two people were killed by Russian rockets in Pokrovsk. One person was killed by Russian shelling in Kharkiv Oblast. The Sloviansk Thermal Power Plant in Donetsk Oblast was also damaged by Russian shelling.

Lord Cameron, during a visit to Kyiv, said that "Ukraine absolutely has the right to strike back at Russia." Asked if that included British supplied weapons he said:”That's a decision for Ukraine and Ukraine has that right.”

In Donetsk Oblast, three people were killed by Russian attacks in Kurakhove and Chasiv Yar, while one person was killed in a separate attack in Kharkiv.

In Russia, the governor of Belgorod Oblast claimed that two people were injured by Ukrainian drone strikes in Voznesenovka and Shebekino.

The HUR claimed the destruction of two Russian locomotives by fire over the last few days: one in Orenburg, the other in Vladikavkaz. Ukrainian media also reported that the agency carried out a cyberattack on internet providers and mobile operators in Tatarstan.

The SBU arrested a resident of Kharkiv on suspicion of spying for Russia.

The FSB claimed to have "liquidated" an agent working for the HUR who was plotting to carry out terrorist attacks against "military and energy objects" in Moscow and Leningrad Oblasts.

In Russia, the governor of Ryazan Oblast claimed that an oil refinery was set on fire by a drone. The governor of Voronezh Oblast claimed that a drone was shot down over Voronezh city, while energy infrastructure was also damaged by drones in Kursk and Oryol Oblasts.

Ukrainian special forces claimed to have disabled two Russian Buk missile systems in Sumy Oblast using attack drones. Several Russian personnel were claimed killed and equipment destroyed during a Ukrainian strike on Rohove, Luhansk Oblast. It is believed three missiles, either ATACMS or Tochka-U, were used with cluster munitions.

The head of the SBU's cybersecurity unit, Illia Vitiuk, was dismissed by Zelenskyy following investigations into suspicious financial activities by the former's wife while he was in office and attempts by SBU personnel to harass journalists.

The United States Department of State alleged the use of chloropicrin by Russian forces in Ukraine and imposed fresh sanctions against Russian individuals and entities as a response.

April 30

Three people were killed in a Russian missile attack on Odesa. Russia subsequently claimed that it had struck the headquarters of the Ukrainian Operational Command South in the city. One person was killed in a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv.

Russian-installed officials in southern Ukraine claimed that several Ukrainian missiles were shot down by air defenses over Crimea.

The SBU arrested two people in Kyiv on suspicion of impersonating security officials on social media and establishing a bot farm as part of a Russian disinformation campaign.

Germany announced a new military aid package for Ukraine, including a Skynex air defense system, missiles for the IRIS-T launchers, ammunition for Leopard 2 tanks, Gepard ammunition, 155 mm shells, small arms ammunition, grenade launchers, mine clearing equipment, bridge laying and first aid supplies. Latvia also pledged another military aid package that included anti-aircraft guns and tactical unmanned surveillance systems.

Lithuania announced its support for repatriating Ukrainian military aged men to be mobilised.

Andriy Demchenko, head of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, said in an interview that 30 Ukrainians had died trying to leave since the invasion began.

Six people were killed in a Russian missile attack on Odesa. One person was killed in a separate attack in Kherson Oblast.

Russia claimed to have taken the village of Semenivka, five kilometers west of Avdiivka.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg visited Kyiv and apologised for delayed weapons shipments from the bloc.

Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi confirmed that Ukrainian forces had retreated from the villages of Berdychi, Semenivka, and Novomykhailivka in Donetsk Oblast. He also said that Ukrainian forces had regained control of Nestryha Island in the Dnipro River delta in Kherson Oblast. The ISW assessed that Ukrainian soldiers suffered a "one-to-three manpower disadvantage" northwest of Avdiivka.

Russia claimed to have shot down 17 drones over Belgorod, Kursk, Kaluga and Bryansk Oblasts.

Russian milbloggers claimed that Ukraine conducted an unsuccessful ATACMS strike on Russian air defense units at Cape Tarkhankut, Crimea.

Ukraine launched a drone attack in Russia's Krasnodar Krai, causing fires in the Ilsky and Slavyansk-on-Kuban oil refineries and striking the Kushchyovskaya airbase, with 10 drones attacking the Slavyansk-on-Kuban refinery alone. The Russian MoD claimed to have shot down 66 drones over Krasnodar Krai and two over Crimea. The distillation column of the Slavyansk-on-Kuban refinery was also reported damaged, forcing it to partially suspend operations. The HUR also claimed to have hit a Russian Podlet-K1 radar used to coordinate S-300/400 missile systems.

Ukraine claimed that two S-300 missiles hit a hospital in Kharkiv, injuring one man. The Ukrainian Air Force claimed to have intercepted 21 out of 34 Russian missiles. Attacks severely damaged equipment at four thermal power plants in Dnipropetrovsk, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Lviv Oblasts causing blackouts. Two people were injured in Kryvyi Rih.

During a visit to Lviv, Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles announced a $100 million AUD military aid package for Ukraine that included drones, short range air defences, air dropped precision munitions and other “high-priority equipment”.

Two Ukrainian soldiers were killed in a stabbing attack by a Russian national in Murnau am See, Germany, in what authorities said may have been a politically-motivated attack.

April 26

Two people were killed by Russian shelling in Bilopillia, Sumy Oblast.

Russian-installed officials in Luhansk Oblast claimed that one person was killed by Ukrainian shelling in Novodruzhesk. The governors of Kursk and Bryansk Oblasts also claimed that two people were killed in separate Ukrainian attacks.

Ukrainian media reported that the HUR carried out an operation that destroyed a Russian Ka-32 helicopter in Ostafyevo Airport, Moscow, and a cyberattack that targeted the United Russia party.

Ukraine withdrew its M1A1 Abrams tanks from frontline service after two months in action. A US Defense official said the withdrawal was due to difficulties in maneuvering undetected through terrain and Russian drone attacks.

Zelenskyy dismissed Brigadier General Oleksandr Yakovets as commander of the Ukrainian military's Support Forces after more than a month in office, and transferred him to head the State Transport Special Service, replacing Bohdan Bondar.

The US government announced a US$6 billion military aid package for Ukraine that included Patriot and NASAMS missiles, counter drone systems, artillery ammunition and other precision strike weapons. US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin called it the “largest security assistance package that we've committed to date”.

Six photos surfaced online, taken somewhere in Russia, which appeared to show a crashed Swift 2 fitted with a single OFAB-100-120 bomb along with other equipment to allow for it to become a “remotely piloted bomber”.

UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps claimed that Italy had supplied Ukraine with Storm Shadow missiles during an interview with the Sunday Times. The Italian government did not confirm this statement.

Russia claimed that a Ukrainian drone attack set fire to energy infrastructure in Smolensk Oblast. A drone struck an industrial area in Lipetsk Oblast without details on injuries or damage caused, while an oil refinery was also struck in Voronezh Oblast, causing a fire.

The Ukrainian government issued a decree banning the delivery of identification documents and passports to Ukrainian men of military age abroad.

The SBU formally announced that Metropolitan Arsenii, the UOC-MP head of the Sviatohirsk Lavra in Donetsk Oblast, was under suspicion of spying for Russia for divulging Ukrainian military positions during a public liturgy.

Ukraine received another tranche of 1.5 billion euros in funds from the EU.

President Biden signed into law the aid package for Ukraine. The Pentagon subsequently announced a $1 billion package that included HIMARS systems, artillery rounds, air defense missiles and Bradley IFVs.

The Ukrainian foreign ministry announced that it would suspend consular services to overseas Ukrainian men who were eligible for military service, with the exception of those returning to Ukraine.

The SBU arrested a resident of Kharkiv on suspicion of spying for Russia.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a new military aid package for Ukraine that included 400 vehicles, 1,600 weapons and four million rounds of ammunition, along with £500 million in funding.

The US Senate passed the bill authorising financial aid for Ukraine. The bill must now be signed into law by President Joe Biden.

Russia claimed to have captured the village of Novomykhailivka, Donetsk Oblast, 20 kilometres from Vuhledar.

The upper half of the Kharkiv TV Tower was destroyed by a Russian air strike.

British intelligence reported that Russian legislator Dmitry Sablin created a new reserve military drone unit called Bars Kaskad to allow VIPs to serve in Ukraine with a reduced risk of “frontline combat”.

A crowdfunding effort by 50,000 private Slovak citizens raised €3,071,405 in a week to contribute to the Czech initiative to purchase artillery ammunition for Ukraine.

Russia claimed to have taken Bohdanivka, three kilometers from Chasiv Yar.

The Russian-installed governor of Sevastopol said that a Neptune missile was launched at a vessel of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, causing a small fire. The Ukrainian Navy claimed that it struck the salvage ship Kommuna. Subsequent satellite images did not reveal any damage.

Ukrainian military observer Kostyantyn Mashovets claimed that the Russian Central Grouping of Forces, which operates in the Pokrovsk and Toretsk directions (northwest and northeast of Avdiivka), had over 86,000 personnel, 280 tanks, 760 armored vehicles, and around 1,100 tube and rocket artillery systems.

Two people were killed in a Russian attack on Vovchansk. One person was killed in a separate attack in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.

Ukrainian forces claimed responsibility for strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, with fires breaking out in three electrical substations in Smolensk, Kaluga and Bryansk Oblasts. A fuel storage tank belonging to Lukoil was set on fire in Smolensk Oblast by falling drone debris. The Russian ministry of defence claimed to have shot down some fifty drones over the said oblasts as well as in Ryazan, Tula, Moscow, Kursk and Belgorod Oblasts, where two people were claimed to have died.

The US House of Representatives passed an aid package for Ukraine. It must be passed by the Senate and signed into law by President Biden.

Eight people, including two children, were killed while 29 others were injured in Russian missile attacks on Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, particularly in Dnipro and Synelnykove. A total of 22 missiles and 14 Shahed drones were fired, including six Kh-22 missiles and two Iskander-K missiles; according to Ukraine, 29 were intercepted including two Kh-22s, which were intercepted by the Patriot air defense system, the first time these missiles were intercepted since the start of the invasion.

Two people were killed in separate attacks in Mykolaiv Oblast and Kherson.

A Russian Tu-22M3 long range strategic bomber crashed in Stavropol Krai while returning to base, killing one crew member, with another missing. Ukraine claimed to have shot it down, at a range of 308 kms, using an S-200 missile, according to an interview with Lt. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov, head of the HUR. Russian authorities claimed the aircraft crashed due to a technical malfunction.

Russian media reported that Russell Bentley, an American citizen and a resident of Donetsk Oblast who fought for pro-Russian separatists during the Donbas War was killed in unspecified circumstances after going missing following a Ukrainian attack on 8 April. His wife claimed that he had been abducted by Russian soldiers.

Russian media outlets claimed that Izvestia war correspondent Semyon Eremin was killed by a Ukrainian drone strike after visiting a Russian unit in Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

Ukraine claimed that the armored strength of the Russian Southern Grouping of Forces had decreased "significantly" to 650 tanks, including those damaged or otherwise disabled, and total number of AFVs deployed was "no more than" 1,850 vehicles.

At least eighteen people were killed and at least 78 others were injured in a Russian missile attack on Chernihiv.

Ukraine claimed responsibility for an attack at the Dzhankoi air base in Crimea, during which six explosions were reported. Russian milbloggers and Ukrainian sources said that that ATACMS missiles or ballistic missiles were used, some of which deployed cluster munitions. An S-400 system was reportedly destroyed, while a millblogger claimed 30 people were killed and 80 others wounded.

Ukrainian media reported that the HUR struck a radar system in the Russian republic of Mordovia and a factory producing bomber aircraft in Tatarstan using drones.

The Canadian government announced that it would budget some 1.6 billion Canadian dollars ($1.16 billion) in military aid for Ukraine over the next five years.

The SBU claimed to have destroyed a Russian Nebo-U radar system in Bryansk Oblast using drones.

Russian-installed officials in Zaporizhzhia Oblast said that Anton Yakimenko, a member of the district council of occupied Yakymivka, was lightly injured in a bomb attack as part of an assassination attempt.

Ukraine announced that it was testing an “unmanned submarine” that can be fitted with a warhead, stealth features and sensors, carry up to 10 divers, carry six torpedoes or missiles and has an endurance of 54 hours/1000 km, with a speed of up to 50 km/h underwater.

Zelenskyy signed the revised mobilization bill into law.

Denmark announced a new military aid package for Ukraine valued at 2.2 billion kroner ($313 million) that is partly aimed at weapons production in the Czech Republic.

Three people were killed in separate Russian attacks in Donetsk Oblast, while two people were killed in Kharkiv Oblast. One person was killed in a Russian attack on a car carrying humanitarian aid in Chernihiv Oblast.

The Russian-installed head of Luhansk Oblast claimed that three people were injured in a Ukrainian missile attack on a factory in Luhansk city. Ukrainian officials claimed to have destroyed a major Russian headquarters using Storm Shadow missiles. In what they called a "heavy blow” to Russian forces.

The SBU announced that it had thwarted an assassination attempt against Kherson Oblast Governor Oleksandr Prokudin, adding that it had arrested a suspect who tried to launch a drone at his car.

The IAEA reported that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant had been placed in a state of cold shutdown for the first time since October 2022.

Germany announced that it would deliver another Patriot battery and additional missiles to Ukraine.

Russian-installed officials in Zaporizhzhia Oblast claimed that ten people were killed by Ukrainian shelling in Tokmak.

One person was killed by Russian shelling in Kharkiv Oblast. Two people were killed in separate Russian attacks in Donetsk Oblast.

Russia reported shooting down four drones over an oil refinery in Novoshakhtinsk. One drone fell in the grounds of the oil refinery. Another drone was reportedly shot down over Belgorod Oblast.

A former SBU agent who defected to Russia shortly before the 2022 invasion was injured in a car bombing in Moscow.

Russia and Ukraine conducted an exchange of war dead, with 99 Ukrainians being exchanged for 23 Russians.

The HUR said that Russia had transferred 2,000 personnel from its Pacific Fleet and 400 personnel from the Russian Air Force's 11th Air and Air Defence Forces Army, in addition to halting the deployment of soldiers to Syria on rotation. It claimed that the transfers will either form new units or fill losses in existing units.

Norway announced that it would transfer 22 F-16s to Ukraine as well as spare parts, simulators and other equipment to operate them.

April 11

Russia launched a massive air attack on cities and energy infrastructure across Ukraine, killing four people in Mykolaiv and destroying the Trypilska thermal power plant in Ukrainka, Kyiv Oblast. Two storage facilities belonging to the state gas firm Naftogaz were also targeted.

Ukrainian authorities ordered the evacuation of families with children from 47 communities in Kharkiv Oblast near the border with Russia due to Russian attacks.

Ukrainian military commanders convinced the Verkhovna Rada to drop a clause from a bill on mobilization of Ukrainian military personnel that allowed soldiers who had fought for 36 months a chance to be discharged. Citing the ongoing Russian offensive, the officers claimed that the clause would "weaken the defence forces". The bill was passed later in the day after over four thousand amendments were submitted since its introduction in February 2024. It must now be signed into law by Zelenskyy.

The Ukrainian Ground Forces announced that Andrii Kovalchuk, the head of its Operational Command South, had been appointed as head of the Odesa Military Academy, while Serhii Litvinov, the head of its Operational Command East, had been appointed as deputy head of the National Defence University of Ukraine. They were replaced in their previous positions by Major General Hennadii Shapovalov and Brigade General Volodymyr Shvediuk, respectively.

According to Ukrainian media, the Russian Buyan-class corvette Serpukhov was damaged in a fire perpetrated by HUR operatives while it was docked in Kaliningrad Oblast. The HUR released a video of the fire being started and claimed that the fire had destroyed “its communication and automation systems”.

Ukraine launched 53 drones into western Russia, with nine drones shot down over Kursk, Belgorod and Saratov Oblasts as well as in Krasnodar Krai. In Rostov Oblast, the governor claimed that an airbase in Morozovsky District was attacked by 44 drones, damaging a power substation and leaving 600 people without power. An apartment building was also damaged by falling debris and eight people injured according to the governor. HUR officials told The Kyiv Post that at least six aircraft were destroyed, eight "heavily damaged" and 20 personnel killed at the Morozovak airbase. Open source intelligence showed 26 Su-34s and three Su-35s at the base prior to the attack. Drones were also reported attacking Engels airbase near Saratov and Yeysk Airport. At Engels airbase the HUR claimed three Tu-95s were damaged and seven personnel injured. In Yeysk, two Su-25s were damaged and four personnel were reported injured. There were also reports of an attack on an airbase in Kursk. Russian sources claimed that all drones and attacks were thwarted.

The drones hit a factory making Shahed drones in Yelabuga, causing "significant damage" according to Ukrainian officials. A nearby dormitory was damaged, injuring twelve students. Other drones struck the Tatneft oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, causing a fire that was extinguished after twenty minutes without causing “critical damage”. The Russian military claimed to have destroyed 11 drones over Rostov Oblast, during which a fire broke out at a thermal power plant in Novocherkassk, causing power outages. While the regional governor denied a link between the fire and Ukrainian drones, a Telegram channel associated with Russian law enforcement said that Ukrainian drones were responsible.

Eleven people were injured in a Russian drone strike on Mykolaiv. Two ballistic missiles were fired on SBU offices in Kyiv. Both missiles were intercepted according to the Ukrainian Air Force, who also said the missiles were fired from Crimea. Other explosions were reported in the capital, damaging property and injuring one person. One person was killed by Russian shelling in Vovchansk.

Russia claimed to have taken the village of Ivanivske, west of Bakhmut.

Russia claimed that a drone strike set fire to the Kuibyshev oil refinery in Samara Oblast, forcing it to shut down half of its production. It also claimed to have intercepted another drone over the Novokuibyshevsk refinery in the same region, as well as 12 other drones over Belgorod, where one person was killed, and in Bryansk, Saratov and Voronezh Oblasts.

Russia launched its largest attack on Ukrainian energy infrastructure since the 2022 invasion. 151 missiles and drones were launched, of which 92 were shot down. One attack struck the DniproHES dam in Zaporizhzhia without causing a breach, although power was lost in nine regions, affecting one million people. Across Ukraine, at least five people were killed and 14 injured.

The Russian government said it was in a “state of war” in Ukraine, the first time since the invasion that it had used the term. Previously, it euphemistically called its war against Ukraine a "Special military operation".

Two people were killed in a Russian drone strike in Dobropillia, Donetsk Oblast, while 12 people were injured in a separate attack in Myrnohrad.

In Russia, a woman was killed in Kulbaki, Kursk Oblast and her husband wounded by Ukrainian shelling according to the regional governor, who also claimed that a fire broke out at an oil depot following the interception of a drone. A drone was also reportedly shot down in Leningrad Oblast.

Russia claimed to have destroyed some 47 Ukrainian drones over Rostov, Volgograd, Belgorod and Kursk Oblasts. Five explosions were reported in Taganrog. One person was injured and the roof of a medical clinic was hit with patients having to be evacuated from the intensive care unit. The Beriev Aircraft Company based in Taganrog, which repairs A-50 radar aircraft, was also damaged.

One person was killed and another was wounded by Russian artillery attacks in Chervonohryhorivka, while another person was killed in a Russian artillery attack in Chasiv Yar. The Russian Ministry of Defense also said it shot down a Ukrainian MiG-29 fighter jet over Pokrovsk.

Three people were killed in Russian attacks in Vovchansk. The Ukrainian-appointed governor of Zaporizhzhia Oblast reported explosions at Russian military facilities in occupied Melitopol and Tokmak.

In Russia, two people were killed and a third person was critically injured during Ukrainian drone attacks on Rozhdestvenka, Belgorod Oblast, which came after the Russian Defense Ministry announced it downed several drones over the region throughout the morning.

Russia claimed to have retaken the southern part of Robotyne.

Two people were killed and 26 others injured in a Russian missile attack on Sumy. In Kharkiv Oblast, three people were killed in separatist Russian attacks in Kupiansk and Vovchansk. Ukrainian authorities ordered mandatory evacuations in 57 settlements near Kupiansk in response to Russian attacks.

Ukrainian Border Guards apprehended a Russian sabotage and reconnaissance group which tried to cross the border in Sumy Oblast.

In Russia, the FSB claimed to have killed a Belarusian national on suspicion of plotting an attack in Karelia on behalf of Ukraine.

Norway announced the payment of 1.6 billion kronor ($153 million) towards the Czech initiative to purchase artillery ammunition for Ukraine. UK defence secretary Grant Shapps also announced a donation of 10,000 drones to Ukraine during his visit to Kyiv.

Former head of the Ukrainian military General Valerii Zaluzhnyi was named as the new Ukrainian ambassador to the UK.

Czech President Petr Pavel announced that the plan to purchase 800,000 artillery shells for Ukraine had reached its targeted budget with contributions from 18 countries, adding that deliveries to Ukraine would start within "weeks".

Russian missiles fired at Odesa narrowly missed President Zelenskyy’s motorcade, in what was believed to be an assassination attempt. The missiles landed some 500 feet from Zelenskyy and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The attack killed five people without causing injury to the President or Prime Minister.

Russia claimed that a Ukrainian drone strike set fire to a warehouse in Kursk Oblast. Attacks were also reported in Voronezh and Belgorod Oblasts. The Mikhailovsky Mining and Processing Plant was struck twice by Ukrainian drones. A source from the HUR later confirmed the attack. Another Ukrainian drone strike cut power to large parts of Crimea.

One person was killed in a Russian attack in Kharkiv Oblast. Exiled officials said that a member of the local branch of the Russian electoral commission in occupied Berdiansk was killed in a car bombing. Pro-Russian officials claimed that five people were killed after the bus they were travelling on hit a landmine in Kirovsk, Luhansk Oblast, while two people were killed by Ukrainian shelling in Kreminna.

The SBU captured a soldier from Dnipropetrovsk Oblast who was trying to flee to Transnistria on suspicion of spying for Russia.

A Russian court sentenced a Ukrainian soldier captured during the Siege of Mariupol to 20 years imprisonment on war crimes charges.

The Russian patrol ship Sergey Kotov, along with an on-board helicopter was sunk by Ukrainian naval drones near the Kerch Strait. The HUR claimed that seven people on board were killed while six others were injured. The Crimean bridge was closed to traffic due to Ukrainian naval and air drones attacking Kerch.

Ukraine confirmed it had used the French-made Hammer bomb in combat for the first time.

Two people were killed in separate Russian attacks in Kharkiv and Donetsk Oblasts.

A Ukrainian court convicted and sentenced two residents of Donetsk Oblast to between 10–12 years imprisonment for spying for Russia. The SBU arrested a resident of Zaporizhzhia on suspicion of planning a bomb attack on behalf of Russia.

Russia claimed to have shot down four drones over Kursk and Belgorod Oblasts. One drone was reported to have caused an explosion at an oil depot in Belgorod. The governor of Kursk Oblast claimed that shelling destroyed a railway station in Glushkovo.

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Sergey Kobylash, the commander of the Long-Range Aviation of the Russian Aerospace Forces, and Viktor Sokolov, the commander of the Black Sea Fleet over their role in war crimes in Ukraine.

Ukraine charged two Russian soldiers for killing a resident of Bucha in 2022.

France joined the Czech initiative to purchase artillery ammunition for Ukraine. Argentina said it would send two Mi-171E helicopters to Ukraine.

Ukrainian forces withdrew from the villages of Stepove and Sieverne near Avdiivka. Ukrainian commander Oleksandr Tarnavskyi said that defence lines in the area had “stabilised” along the Tonenke-Orlivka-Berdychi axis.

The Ukrainian Air Force claimed the downing of two Russian Su-34 fighter jets on separate occasions. The Ukrainian military said a Russian Shahed drone overflew Moldovan airspace for "tens of kilometers" on its way to Ukraine, where it was intercepted. Ukrainian partisans claimed to have blown up an office of the United Russia party in Nova Kakhovka.

Two police officers were killed by Russian shelling in Khotin. One person was killed in a separate attack in Kherson Oblast.

Russia later said it had taken the village and claimed to have pushed back Ukrainian forces by 10 kilometers. Ukraine appeared to have recorded its first loss of an M1A1 Abrams tank in battle. as well as its first loss of a NASAMS system to Russian forces in Zaporizhzhia.

Zelenskyy signed a law revising the conditions for the demobilization of conscripts.

In Russia, the Governor of Belgorod Oblast claimed a Ukrainian drone strike killed three people and wounded another three in the village of Pochaevo.

Denmark dropped its investigation into the 2022 Nordstream pipeline sabotage, citing insufficient grounds to support a criminal case.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico claimed that several NATO and EU members were considering to deploy soldiers to Ukraine. which was denied by NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg. French President Emmanuel Macron gave his support for EU funds to be used to buy ammunition for Ukraine outside the bloc, particularly the Czech proposal to buy artillery ammunition from southern Africa and South Korea. Germany announced a new military aid package to Ukraine that included 14,000 155mm shells and four WISENT 1 mine-clearing vehicles.

Ukrainian commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi announced the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Avdiivka to prevent encirclement by the Russian army. The city fell to Russian forces later in the day, with pockets of resistance remaining in the Avdiivka Coke Plant. Between 500-1000 Ukrainian soldiers are believed to have been captured or gone missing in the withdrawal. Russian forces were also storming Robotyne, according to the ISW. Ukraine claimed to have defeated a Russian offensive in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, killing 70 Russian soldiers and injuring 80 as well as destroying 18 pieces of equipment, including three tanks.

The Ukrainian Air Force claimed to have shot down two Russian Su-34s and a Su-35 fighter jet over eastern Ukraine.

Ukrainian commander Oleksandr Tarnavskyi said that Ukrainian forces had withdrawn from the Zenit air defense complex in Avdiivka, which they had used as a strongpoint since 2014.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko claimed that a group of Ukrainian and Belarusian saboteurs were caught with explosives on the border with Ukraine as part of plans to commit acts of sabotage in Russia and Belarus.

President Zelenskyy arrived in Germany to sign a bilateral security deal with the German government. The German government announced that it would give €7.1bn of military aid to Ukraine in 2024. Along with a separate €1.13bn aid package. Which included 100 IRIS-T missiles, a SykNex air defence unit, 18 howitzers and 18 self propelled howitzers. Later in the day, Zelenskyy signed a 10-year bilateral security deal with President Macron in France that would provide Ukraine with “3 billion euros ($3.2 billion)” of aid in 2024.

Germany delivered 3,990 155 mm shells, 18 armored personnel carriers, three Wisent demining tanks, 62 reconnaissance drones, a Dachs engineering vehicle, nine mine-clearing plows, four border guard vehicles, and 500 LED lights and IT equipment to Ukraine.

Ukraine fired several missiles at Belgorod Oblast, according to Russian officials. Fourteen were shot down but one hit and "heavily damaged" a shopping centre in Belgorod city, killing seven, including children, and injuring 18 others. Another missile struck a sports stadium. Russia claimed the missiles were fired from an RM-70 Vampire. An oil refinery in Kursk Oblast was set on fire by a Ukrainian drone strike, according to local officials.

In Kharkiv Oblast, one person was killed in a Russian missile strike on Chuhuiv while three others died in Chorne. Two people were killed by Russian shelling in Kherson and Donetsk Oblast.

The Ukrainian Third Assault Brigade confirmed that it had been "urgently" redeployed to Avdiivka, adding that the situation there was "extremely critical," and claiming to have inflicted "critical losses" on two Russian battalions.

The NACP added the Irish-American oilfield service company Weatherford International to its list of international war sponsors for continuing to do business in Russia.

In an interview with ZDF, Ukrainian military commander Oleksandr Syrskyi said that Ukrainian forces had shifted to defensive operations to exhaust advancing Russian forces. The Ukrainian 110th Mechanized Brigade was rotated out of Avdiivka after having been stationed there since March 2022 as it "no longer has sufficient capabilities to hold the city".

The HUR claimed that it had sunk the Russian Tarantul-class missile corvette Ivanovets in Lake Donuzlav on the west coast of Crimea using naval drones. Ukrainian sources claimed that the entire crew of 40-50 personnel had been killed, but this could not be confirmed.

Two French nationals working as humanitarian volunteers were killed and five others were injured in a Russian drone strike on Beryslav. Ukrainian authorities subsequently prohibited foreign volunteers, NGOs and diplomatic staff from entering parts of Kherson Oblast without their permission.

In Russia, a drone crashed into the grounds of the Nevsky Mazut oil refinery in St. Petersburg, causing an explosion and fire. Another drone was reportedly shot down over Pskov Oblast. A court in Moscow convicted Donbas separatist commander Igor Girkin aka Strelkov, of extremism and sentenced him to four years' imprisonment for calling Putin a "coward" over his conduct of the war in Ukraine. A Russian Il-76 transport aircraft carrying 74 people was reported have crashed in Yablonovo, Belgorod Oblast, killing everyone on board, including 65 Ukrainian POWs according to Russian officials. The Ukrainian military claimed the aircraft was transporting S-300 missiles. A spokesperson for the HUR confirmed a prisoner swap was due to happen on 24 January but did not proceed, adding that it was checking if Ukrainian POWs were on board the aircraft. It later released another statement where it accused Russian forces of failing to advise them to keep the airspace clear. The BBC considered this statement a “tacit acknowledgement” that Ukraine shot down the aircraft.

The mayor of Avdiivka said that Russian forces had managed to enter the southern part of the city for the first time but were forced out by Ukrainian forces. A Russian rocket strike in nearby Hirnyk killed two people.

Russia launched a series of missile strikes across Ukraine, killing at least 18 people and injuring 130 others according to President Zelenskyy. Ukrainian forces claimed to have intercepted 21 of 42 missiles launched. Eleven people and two dogs were killed and at least 57 others were injured in Kharkiv. One person was killed in Pavlohrad while at least 22 others were injured in Kyiv. Four people were killed in Kherson Oblast.

Hackers from the Ukrainian group BO Team launched a cyberattack on the Russian Far Eastern Research Center of Space Hydrometeorology "Planeta" based in Khabarovsk, destroying 280 servers and two petabytes of data that were used by multiple Russian government agencies, as well as a digital array valued at $10 million, the softwares of the facility's supercomputers. The cyberattack also reportedly disabled the facility's air conditioning, humidification, and emergency power supply systems, and rendered a strategic station on Bolshevik Island in the Russian Arctic offline.

Russian authorities said there were no casualties but two storage facilities and a pumping station were damaged. A US Department of Defense Office of Inspector General report revealed that the Pentagon was unable to quickly or fully account for over $1 billion worth of weapons aid to Ukraine, with US officials and diplomats failing to properly monitor 39,139 high-value weapons and devices intended to reach front line Ukrainian units. No evidence of theft or diversion of weaponry was presented in the report, as such investigation was beyond the scope of the inspector general's examination.

US National Security official John Kirby said that the US had run out of funding for military aid to Ukraine.

The Verkhovna Rada refused to debate legislation regarding an extension of mobilisation which would have reduced the age of conscription from 27 to 25 and increased penalties for draft evaders. A resident of Donetsk Oblast was sentenced by a Ukrainian court to 12 years' imprisonment for spying on Ukrainian military movements in Avdiivka for Russia.

Ukrainian media reported that Anton Kravets, founder of the Ukrainian rubber goods manufacturer Kyivguma [uk], was arrested on suspicion of exporting tactical harnesses and bandages to Russia through Europe, some of which were used by the Russian military in Ukraine.

An Su-34 bomber was set on fire at the Chelyabinsk air base by a Ukrainian saboteur according to the HUR. Russian media reported that the fire was allegedly caused by a 16-year-old boy from Dagestan.

Germany delivered a military aid package to Ukraine that included a Skynex air defense system, 10 Marder armored vehicles, ammunition for Leopard tanks, two TRML-4D air surveillance radars, 30 drone detection systems, IRIS-T anti-air missiles , 10 GO12 ground surveillance radars , 155 mm artillery ammunition, firearms munitions, two mine-clearing tanks, a bridge-laying tank, trucks, assault rifles, combat helmets, and winter camouflage nets and ponchos.

Ukraine launched 12 missiles and several drones on Belgorod.

230 Ukrainian POWs and 248 Russians were released in the largest prisoner exchange between the two countries since the 2022 invasion. The exchange was mediated by the UAE.

Norway announced it would send two F-16s to Denmark to help train Ukrainian pilots.

The SBU reported that Russian hackers had gained remote control over security cameras in Kyiv, which were then used to check on the positions of air defence units and give battle damage assessments.

In an earlier strike the Ukrainian Air Force claimed to have shot down all 35 drones sent from Russia and occupied Ukraine. In Dnipropetrovsk Oblast falling debris took out a power line and in Mykolaiv Oblast falling debris started a fire that was extinguished. According to calculations based on the figures of the Ukrainian Air Force; Forbes Ukraine claimed that the missile attack that day cost Russia about 620 million US dollars.

Two people were killed by Russian shelling in Donetsk Oblast.

Russia accused Ukraine of launching another missile attack on Belgorod. One missile struck a car, killing a man, another hit an auto market wounding four. Three others were also injured in separate instances. Russian air defences claimed to have shot down 17 missiles fired from a MLRS.

A Russian Air Force aircraft accidentally released its explosive ordinance on the Russian village of Petropavlovka, Voronezh Oblast, injuring four people and damaging six or seven buildings.

The UK Ministry of Defence assessed that the Russian 104th Guards Airborne Division likely suffered "exceptionally heavy losses" during its first combat deployment against Ukrainian forces near Krynky.

Romanian authorities said that the remains of a Russian drone were found on its territory near Grindu, around 20 kilometres from the Ukrainian port of Reni. The drone was believed to have been launched over the previous night heading for targets in Odesa Oblast.

In Russia, nine drones were reportedly shot down over Kaluga and Moscow Oblasts.

In a press conference, Putin indicated that Russia would only negotiate with Ukraine "when we achieve our objectives". He stated that another mobilization was unnecessary as "617,000" Russian soldiers were fighting in Ukraine.

Drone footage emerged appearing to show Russian soldiers in Zaporizhzhia Oblast using Ukrainian POWs as human shields as they advanced, in contravention of the Geneva Conventions that regulate treatment of POWs. One was reportedly shown killed in the video.

Germany delivered a military aid package to Ukraine that included a Patriot missile system, 7,390 rounds of 155 mm ammunition, 14 drone detection systems, eight off-road Zetros trucks, and three mine clearing systems. Russian air defences reportedly shot down a Ukrainian Tochka-U missile over Belgorod Oblast.

A “massive” cyberattack caused disruptions at Ukraine's largest mobile phone operator Kyivstar, and Monobank, one of the country's biggest banks. Authorities reported that the attack also disabled air raid warning systems in Kyiv Oblast, Sumy and Dnipro. The Russian hacker group Solntsepek, which is believed by Ukraine to be run by Russian military intelligence, subsequently claimed responsibility for the attack.

The HUR said that its cyber units, along with the Ukrainian Defence Ministry, hacked into the central server of the Federal Tax Service of Russia, as well as 2,300 of its regional servers, extracting sensitive information and destroying the entire tax database with malware.

During President Zelenskyy's meeting with US President Joe Biden at the White House, the latter announced a new aid package to Ukraine valued at $200 million.

Finland announced that it would double its manufacture of artillery shells, both for domestic defence and to ensure supplies to Ukraine.

Ukraine imposed sanctions on 300 individuals and entities linked to Russia. Russian authorities claimed to have arrested a Belarusian national who was accused of bombing two trains on the Baikal-Amur Mainline on behalf of Ukrainian intelligence on 29–30 November. A court in Chernihiv Oblast sentenced a Russian soldier to 12 years' imprisonment for abducting and taking hostage a 15-year old for four days in 2022 in an effort to coerce his mother, a soldier, to give intelligence on Ukrainian positions.

Twenty were aimed at central Ukraine and some "broke through" Ukrainian defences to strike Kalynivka, Vinnytsia Oblast, starting a "powerful fire". Romania also claimed that radar detected an "unauthorised" entry into its airspace towards Galați.

The Ukrainian Navy announced that it had conducted a successful operation to extract two airborne assault operators who were trapped and forced into hiding in Russian-occupied territory for more than one and a half years after being injured. The operation was conducted by the navy's Angels special forces unit, while an airborne assault detachment provided covering fire during the extraction. Ukrainian military intelligence claimed that a Russian soldier it had recruited in July had defected to Ukraine after convincing 11 other Russian soldiers to defect as well.

Russian officials claimed that Ukrainian drones dropped explosives on an electrical substation in the village of Belaya in Kursk Oblast, cutting power to five settlements. A dozen other drones were reportedly shot down over Belgorod, Kursk and Kaluga Oblasts. A radar station near Giryi, Kursk Oblast was reportedly destroyed by a drone.

Ukrainian war photographer Volodymyr Myroniuk was announced to have been killed while filming in Kurdiumivka on the Donetsk front.

President Putin appointed former Wagner Group commander and retired colonel Andrei Troshev (nom de guerre Sedoi) to oversee volunteer fighter units in Ukraine.

Russia launched an overnight air attack on Odesa, damaging port infrastructure and a disused hotel and killing two people in a strike on a grain warehouse. Several buildings in the historic centre, including the Vorontsov Palace and eight buildings on Prymorskyi Boulevard, where also damaged, while missile debris was later found in Chițcani, across the border in the breakaway Moldovan region of Transnistria. Though similar cases had happened before in government-controlled regions of Moldova, this was the first time it happened in Transnistria. Three people were killed in a separate airstrike in Beryslav, Kherson Oblast, while three others were killed by an artillery strike in Kherson city.

Another air attack was reported in Sevastopol, with a missile reportedly shot down over Belbek airbase. A Russian ammunition dump in Sorokyne, Luhansk Oblast, was destroyed in a suspected Ukrainian attack.

President Zelenskyy announced the arrival of the first batch out of a total of 31 M1 Abrams tanks promised by the United States to Ukraine, without specifying its number, although Politico reported the number to be ten. More tanks were expected to be sent "during the fall."

However, Russia released a video appearing to show Sokolov alive on 26 September. Ukrainian sources said that Storm Shadow missiles were used, Russian sources claimed that seven missiles, including one Neptune missile, were used, with air defences shooting down five missiles. Russian officials also reported a "large-scale cyberattack" in occupied Crimea.

One person was killed and 55 others were injured in a Russian missile attack on Kremenchuk. Another person was killed by shelling in Kherson.

Ukraine and the United States announced a program to manufacture "air defence systems" in Ukraine.

During President Zelenskyy's visit to Ottawa, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged 650 million Canadian dollars ($480 million) in military aid for Ukraine that included 50 armored vehicles and training on F-16 fighter jets. The Canadian government also imposed sanctions on 63 Russian individuals and entities for their role in the invasion and the deportation of Ukrainian children. In Cherkasy, falling debris damaged a hotel and injured several people. Other explosions were reported in Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi, Rivne, Vinnytsia, Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk. More than 20 people were reportedly injured in the attacks, which was also the first strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure in six months. Belarusian state media reported the arrival in the country of 48 children taken from Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine as part of what it called a "holiday" organized by a charity supported by President Lukashenko.
