Discontinued Original Themes (1998-2006)
The original sets were designed to be interactive, tabletop games with minifigures on special stands that could be flicked to pass or shoot the ball.
Town/Football (1998): The initial sets were a brief part of the Town theme, often available as promotional items with sponsors like Shell. They included stadium accessories like stands, lighting towers, and medic stations.
LEGO Sports: Football/Soccer (2000-2006): This official theme was highly detailed, featuring branding from sponsors like Adidas and Coca-Cola, and minifigures of real-life players such as Zinedine Zidane.
Championship Challenge (3409): A large set featuring a full field, goals, and 12 minifigures for a two-player game.
Women's National Team (3416): A set from 2001 featuring six female minifigures.
Grand Championship Cup (3425): A large set that included 21 minifigures and could be expanded with field expansion sets.
Modern Football Sets (Current)
LEGO no longer produces a dedicated, continuous "Sports" theme, but it has released several standalone sets in recent years to celebrate football, often through the LEGO Ideas or Icons lines.
Icons of Play (40634): A current, playable set that celebrates women in sport and includes half a pitch, stands, a scoreboard, and 15 diverse minifigures.
