2026, May 29 Romania
Romania’s defence ministry said the drone entered Romanian airspace before hitting the roof of a 10-storey apartment block. Around 70 residents were evacuated, while emergency crews extinguished the fire. A woman and a child reportedly suffered minor injuries.
As a response, Romania — a NATO member — scrambled F-16 fighter jets and a military helicopter after radar tracked the drone. Romanian officials called the incident a “serious violation” of international law and urged NATO allies to speed up anti-drone support.
NATO also condemned what it described as Russia’s “recklessness.”
This is one of the most serious spillover incidents affecting Romanian territory since the Russia-Ukraine war began, and the first known case of civilians being injured by a drone strike inside Romania.
