2026, July 8 Israel
Key findings include:
About 3 in 10 U.S. adults (roughly one-third) believe Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
Around 2 in 10 say Israel has not committed genocide.
Roughly half of respondents said they didn't know enough to make a judgment.
Among Democrats, about half believe Israel has committed genocide, while only 13% of Republicans say the same. Republicans under 45 were more likely than older Republicans to hold that view.
About 30% of Jewish American adults surveyed said they believe Israel has committed genocide, while 49% said it has not.
The poll also found broader changes in U.S. attitudes:
Many Americans who initially viewed Israel's military response to the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack as justified now believe its ongoing military operations are not justified.
58% of Democrats say the United States is too supportive of Israel, up from 45% in an AP-NORC poll conducted in January 2024.
The term "genocide" remains highly disputed. Israel strongly rejects the accusation, arguing its military campaign is aimed at defeating Hamas while complying with international law. Several human rights organizations have argued that Israel's actions amount to genocide, while the legal question is still being considered in international courts and has not been conclusively determined.
