FIFA to investigate World Cup final post-match brawl

FIFA has officially opened a disciplinary investigation into the violent scenes that erupted immediately after Spain's 1–0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

According to FIFA, the confrontation began when Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes confronted Spain's Eric García and Gavi after the final whistle. The altercation quickly escalated into a larger melee involving players and coaching staff from both teams. Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni was seen trying to calm the situation.

FIFA has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate the incident. The inquiry will determine whether individual players, team officials, or the Argentine Football Association should face sanctions. Possible penalties could include:
