2026, August 12 United States
According to reports:
Trump was moved from the aircraft in a catering vehicle, allowing the switch to happen without attracting attention.
He boarded a smaller US government/military aircraft instead.
Air Force One continued to operate as a decoy, with members of Trump's staff, security personnel and journalists aboard.
The operation was reportedly prompted by intelligence concerning a possible Iranian threat against Trump, including fears of an assassination attempt.
Trump has now confirmed that the switch happened, saying the decision was made by the Secret Service.
The surprising part
Trump said that the alternative aircraft he actually flew on may have faced "greater risk" than the original Air Force One.
In other words, the logic was not necessarily that the second aircraft was inherently safer. The idea was apparently that the people posing the threat would be looking for Trump's expected aircraft, so changing the aircraft and keeping the original plane moving could make it harder to identify his actual location.
Why Iran?
The reported threat is particularly notable because tensions between the US and Iran have been extremely high. Reports indicate that US intelligence had identified a possible Iranian plot against Trump.
However, it is important to distinguish between a reported intelligence threat and a confirmed Iranian assassination operation. There is currently no public evidence establishing that Iran actually had a missile or assassination team positioned to attack Trump's aircraft.
Why keep it secret?
Presidential travel security depends heavily on uncertainty about the president's actual movements. If an adversary knows exactly which aircraft Trump is aboard, where it is going and when it will depart, that information could potentially be exploited.
Using a decoy aircraft is therefore a fairly logical security technique — although the unusual way the switch was conducted has generated controversy because journalists and some White House personnel apparently didn't know what was happening.
The biggest takeaway: Trump wasn't simply changing planes for convenience. The Secret Service apparently believed there was enough of a potential threat to justify secretly removing the president from the aircraft everyone believed he was travelling on. The fact that this was kept secret for weeks makes the revelation particularly striking.
