🤖 How it works
The initial fleet consists of a small number of all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with Wayve's AI driving system, cameras and other sensors. Passengers order them through the normal Uber app.
Importantly, however, these aren't completely driverless taxis yet.
A trained, TfL-licensed private-hire driver remains in the vehicle as a safety operator, ready to intervene if necessary. Fully driverless operation will require further regulatory approval.
📱 What happens to the passenger?
If you request an UberX, Uber Electric or Uber Comfort in London, you may be randomly matched with a Wayve vehicle.
You can:
accept the autonomous vehicle;
switch to a conventional Uber instead;
unlock the vehicle using the Uber app;
begin the journey through the app;
see the vehicle's planned route on an in-car screen.
There is currently no extra charge for being matched with a Wayve autonomous vehicle.
Uber says more than 140,000 Londoners have already opted in to increase their chances of getting one.
🧠 Why Wayve is interesting
Wayve's approach differs from some competing autonomous-driving systems.
Rather than relying heavily on highly detailed, pre-built maps of every road, Wayve uses an AI Driver designed to learn how to navigate real-world environments and adapt to different driving situations.
That could be extremely important for scaling robotaxis.
If an autonomous system requires a painstakingly mapped and maintained database for every city, expanding from London to Paris, Tokyo or Malta becomes a huge logistical exercise.
Wayve's objective is essentially:
Train the AI to drive → take it to a new city → let it adapt.
🇬🇧 Why London is a tough test
London is actually a pretty brutal environment for autonomous driving:
🚶 Pedestrians crossing unexpectedly
🚴 Cyclists filtering through traffic
🚌 Buses stopping frequently
🚕 Black cabs and aggressive lane changes
🛵 Motorcycles and scooters
🏙️ Narrow streets
🚦 Complex junctions

If Wayve can demonstrate reliable autonomous driving in central London, that's a significant technological achievement.
🌍 It's bigger than London
Uber isn't treating this as a one-city experiment.
The company and Wayve have plans to deploy autonomous rides in more than 10 cities, while Uber is simultaneously partnering with numerous autonomous-driving companies around the world.
Uber, Wayve and Stellantis are also working toward Level 4 autonomous vehicles, where the vehicle can perform the entire driving task without a human driver under defined operating conditions.
And that's where things get really interesting.
🚗 What this could mean for taxi drivers
The immediate impact is small—only around 15 vehicles are being deployed initially according to reports.
But the long-term economic implications are enormous.
If autonomous cars eventually become reliable enough to operate without safety drivers, the economics of ride-hailing change dramatically:

Potential future:
Passenger → Uber → AI → Car
The human driver is currently the largest labour component of many ride-hailing journeys. Removing that cost could make autonomous rides considerably cheaper—or allow Uber to capture substantially higher margins.
That's why this isn't simply a new type of taxi. It's potentially a fundamental change to Uber's business model.
London is effectively becoming one of the world's most important real-world laboratories for seeing whether that vision actually works.
