AI Becomes a Growing Military-Security Concern

Military officials, diplomats and academics from around 100 countries gathered at China's Xiangshan Forum this week, where growing concerns were expressed about artificial intelligence transforming warfare. More than 2,000 participants discussed the risks associated with increasingly autonomous weapons, drones and AI-assisted military decision-making.

A major concern is that AI could dramatically shorten the time available for governments and military commanders to make decisions during a crisis. Participants also warned that misinformation and disinformation could make it harder for governments and populations to establish what is actually happening during conflicts.

The discussions come as the United States and China prepare for bilateral summit discussions while remaining divided over how AI should be controlled, particularly when the technology is applied to military and potentially nuclear systems.
