Moldova Declares Energy and Water Emergency
2026, September 23Moldova
Moldova’s parliament approved a 60-day state of emergency covering energy and water supplies, with the measure due to take effect on 26 September. Authorities cited severe drought, critically low river levels and rising energy costs, warning that the country faces a combined supply crisis ahead of winter.
The emergency gives the government broader powers to respond to shortages and stabilize essential services. Moldova is particularly exposed because it relies heavily on imported gas and electricity, while reduced inflows from rivers connected to Ukraine have added pressure to water reserves.
