US, Denmark and Greenland Agree on Expanded Arctic Security Presence
2026, September 20Greenland / Denmark / United States
The United States, Denmark and Greenland reached an agreement allowing a significant expansion of the U.S. military presence in Greenland while restricting rival powers from establishing bases on the island. The deal is expected to be formally signed during the UN General Assembly next week.
Danish and Greenlandic leaders said the agreement would not compromise Greenland’s sovereignty or self-government, but key details—including the scale of the buildup and any possible U.S. role in foreign policy or resource decisions—have not yet been made public.
