Yemen's Red Sea Offensive Triggers New Humanitarian Emergency
2026, September 18Yemen / Saudi Arabia
Fighting between Houthi forces and Saudi-backed forces has intensified along Yemen's Red Sea coast, with the UN's migration agency reporting that at least 112,000 people have been displaced inside Yemen and nearly 3,000 have fled by sea to Djibouti. The escalation threatens a strategically important area around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world's major shipping routes.
The conflict is also creating wider economic concerns because attacks and insecurity threaten Saudi oil exports and commercial shipping. Reuters reports that China has privately urged Iran to use its influence with the Houthis to help contain the escalation, while Saudi and Houthi forces continue exchanging strikes.
