Moldova Begins Emergency Measures Over Energy and Water Supplies

Moldova’s 60-day state of emergency for energy and water supplies took effect on Saturday. Parliament approved the measure after the government cited severe drought, low river levels, rising energy costs and the risk of shortages ahead of winter.

The emergency gives the government broader authority to stabilize essential services in a country already exposed to imported energy and regional instability linked to the war in neighbouring Ukraine. Officials say the measures are intended to prevent a combined water and energy crisis rather than respond to a single isolated outage.
