Trump–Xi Summit Ends Without a Major Breakthrough
2026, September 27United States / China
U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded a three-day summit in Washington that emphasized personal diplomacy but produced little public progress on their most difficult disputes. Trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and China’s relationship with Iran remained unresolved, with details of limited trade agreements expected to be released later.
The summit still matters internationally because the two countries are the world’s largest economies and their trade and technology policies affect supply chains, financial markets and strategic competition worldwide. Earlier talks also included a proposed mechanism for notifying each other about AI incidents that could threaten national security.
