The number of confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has risen above 8,000, while health authorities face shortages of medical workers and difficulties containing the outbreak. The crisis is centred in eastern Congo, where treatment centres are under severe pressure.

The outbreak is a major international health concern because transmission remains active across densely populated areas and humanitarian access is difficult. Health teams are continuing vaccination, treatment and contact-tracing efforts, but the scale of the outbreak is straining the country’s already limited healthcare capacity.
