Iran–US Diplomacy Reopens a Narrow Path Through the Hormuz Crisis
2026, September 30Iran / United States / Qatar
Iran said it has received an official U.S. response to Tehran's latest proposal for ending the seven-month Gulf war and restoring a ceasefire. Iran's proposal reportedly included reopening the Strait of Hormuz in return for lifting the U.S. blockade, unfreezing Iranian assets and easing sanctions on oil exports; the contents of Washington's response have not been made public.
The diplomatic exchange is potentially the most consequential development for the global economy because Hormuz is a critical energy chokepoint. Oil prices have already risen sharply during the crisis, while markets remain highly sensitive to any indication that shipping and energy exports could normalize.
