Yemen Conflict Threatens to Turn the Red Sea Into a Wider Regional Front

The UN is intensifying diplomatic efforts to contain Yemen's rapidly worsening conflict. UN envoy Hans Grundberg has met Houthi negotiators in Muscat and Saudi officials as the Iran-backed Houthis continue their offensive along Yemen's Red Sea coast and cross-border attacks on Saudi Arabia increase.

The escalation is particularly significant internationally because the Houthis' advances threaten the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world's most important maritime chokepoints. The latest fighting has reportedly killed at least 838 people, injured more than 3,600 and displaced over 145,000 Yemenis, while the threat to shipping compounds the separate disruption around the Strait of Hormuz.
