Philippines Confronts Chinese Research Vessel Near Taiwan

The Philippines deployed its largest coast-guard vessel and an aircraft to challenge a Chinese research vessel operating near the northern Philippine province of Batanes, close to Taiwan. Manila said the operation disrupted what it described as unauthorized marine scientific research and forced the Chinese vessel to leave the area. A Chinese coast-guard ship was also present during the confrontation.

The incident adds another pressure point to already strained China–Philippines relations and is particularly sensitive because of the location near Taiwan. Manila has increasingly asserted its maritime rights and monitored Chinese activity in waters it considers strategically important, while Beijing disputes some of the Philippines' maritime claims.
