Russia's Black Sea Strikes Put International Shipping Under Fresh Pressure
2026, October 5Ukraine / Russia / Romania
A civilian cargo ship carrying corn and owned by a Turkish company sank in the Black Sea after a fire, with two people killed and 11 crew members rescued. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy blamed Russian drone strikes, saying the vessel was attacked in international waters; Russia has not commented on the incident. The crew included Azerbaijani and Indian nationals.
The incident comes as Russia says it has struck two Ukrainian cargo vessels and port-related facilities, while Ukraine continues attacks on Russian energy infrastructure. The growing danger to commercial shipping is particularly significant for countries around the Black Sea and for international food exports.
