Hormuz Remains Shut as Iran Sets Conditions for Reopening
2026, October 4Iran / United States / Gulf region
Iran says the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until seven conditions from an earlier interim agreement with the United States are fulfilled. Tehran says it has received Washington's response through Qatar but insists the dispute is currently focused on reopening the strait rather than broader nuclear negotiations. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Iran prefers diplomacy but is prepared to respond to further military action.
The impasse keeps one of the world's most important energy chokepoints at the centre of the global economic crisis. Prolonged disruption to oil and LNG shipments could continue to affect fuel prices, inflation and energy security well beyond the Middle East.
