Europe Prepares Emergency Diesel Release as Global Fuel Crisis Spreads
2026, October 2France / Germany / European Union
European countries are considering releasing strategic diesel reserves after pressure from Washington to help ease a global fuel shortage caused by disruption in Middle Eastern energy supplies. France has proposed that European countries release 50 million barrels of diesel, alongside a separate release of crude reserves by International Energy Agency members.
China has meanwhile suspended oil-product exports to destinations outside Hong Kong and Macau for October, a move expected to tighten fuel supplies across Asia. Oil prices fell more than 2% on Friday as markets reacted to the possibility of coordinated stock releases and renewed diplomatic efforts over Iran.
