Ebola Crisis in Congo Passes 4,000 Deaths as Treatment Centre Is Destroyed

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has now caused more than 4,000 deaths among about 8,300 confirmed cases, making it the fastest-growing Ebola crisis on record, according to an Associated Press report. The outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo virus, for which there is currently no known treatment or vaccine.

The response is being severely hampered by insecurity and distrust. A major Ebola transit centre in Ituri province was destroyed by soldiers searching for weapons, displacing roughly 19,000 people, while more than 50 health workers have reportedly died. The WHO and Africa CDC say confirmed cases have recently fallen, but experts warn this may partly reflect reduced access to affected communities.
