FlyDubai Attack Triggers Regional Aviation Security Crisis

A FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia after its copilot allegedly stabbed the captain during the flight. The captain, Smit Machchhar, managed to regain control of the aircraft and passengers helped restrain the attacker; all passengers survived.

The incident has led Israel to suspend normal commercial flights with the UAE and begin repatriation flights for stranded passengers. Authorities in Israel, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and the United States are investigating the attack, including its motive and possible links to the wider regional conflict. President Trump has suggested Iran could face severe retaliation if an Iranian connection is established, adding another complication to already fragile U.S.–Iran diplomacy.
