Black Sea Shipping Becomes a New Front in the Ukraine War
2026, October 6Bulgaria / Ukraine / Russia
A drone attack struck two commercial vessels in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea. One ship, the Togo-flagged Alfa Watan, sank, while the Palau-flagged Able caught fire; the crew of the latter was evacuated, with two people injured. The origin of the drones has not been conclusively established, although the incident is being assessed as potentially linked to the Russia-Ukraine war.
The incident is particularly significant because it marks a further geographical expansion of the threat to civilian shipping. It follows a deadly attack on another commercial vessel near Romania and has prompted strong condemnation from Bulgaria and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
