Yemen Offensive Threatens Another Major Blow to Red Sea Shipping
2026, October 6Yemen / Saudi Arabia / Iran
Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces have advanced around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, taking several strategic areas from Iran-aligned Houthi forces. The offensive has been accompanied by renewed fighting and Saudi-led air operations, while Saudi Arabia reported attacks on its Jizan and Najran airports, which injured three people.
The escalation matters globally because Bab el-Mandeb is a critical shipping route linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Further disruption could increase shipping costs and energy-market pressure at a time when the separate crisis around the Strait of Hormuz is already putting strain on global fuel supplies.
