Yemen War Escalates Into a Major Red Sea Crisis
2026, October 7Yemen / Saudi Arabia / Iran
The conflict in Yemen has sharply intensified, with Houthi forces launching missiles and drones at Saudi targets including airports and military facilities. Riyadh said it intercepted a ballistic missile north of the capital, while flights at King Khalid International Airport were disrupted. The attacks followed a major Saudi-backed ground and air offensive against the Houthis along Yemen's western coast.
The humanitarian consequences are escalating rapidly. The UN's International Organization for Migration says more than 200,000 people have been displaced since early September, up from about 76,000 in mid-September. The fighting is also concentrated around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, making the conflict a serious threat to international shipping and global energy security.
