Washington Opens Direct Channel to Myanmar's Military Government
2026, October 8Myanmar / United States
The United States has begun direct talks with Myanmar's military-installed government, marking the highest-level U.S. engagement with the junta since its 2021 coup. A senior U.S. official met junta leader Min Aung Hlaing in September, initially seeking the release of a detained American businessman but also discussing scam networks targeting Americans and access to Myanmar's strategically important rare-earth resources.
The move represents a significant shift from Washington's previous policy of isolating and sanctioning Myanmar's military leadership over human-rights abuses. The administration says it is also maintaining contact with democratic opposition groups and ethnic armed organizations, but critics warn that direct engagement could provide the junta with international legitimacy.
