Security threats force FIFA to postpone major esports tournament in Saudi Arabia

2026, October 15

Saudi Arabia

FIFA and the Saudi Esports Federation have postponed the FIFAe Finals 2026, which had been scheduled to take place in Jeddah from 16 to 25 October. Organisers cited security concerns and logistical difficulties following attacks in Saudi Arabia. Japan and Brazil have also withdrawn their esports teams because of safety concerns. A replacement date has not yet been announced.

The disruption extends beyond esports. The Six Kings Slam tennis exhibition has been moved to December, while officials from the Asian Football Confederation are monitoring whether security conditions could affect the Asian Cup scheduled for January 2027. No final decision has been announced about changing the football tournament's schedule.

Why it matters: The postponement demonstrates how regional conflict can disrupt international sporting events, travel plans and major commercial commitments.
